Learning together, growing together

Year 2

Welcome to Year 2

Year 2 Trip to Tynemouth and The Blue Reef Aquarium

We had a fantastic day in Tynemouth.  We had a walk along the beach before visiting Blue Reef Aquarium.  It was brilliant watching the seals as we ate our lunch.  We had a touch pool session where we were told lots of interesting facts about the creatures and then everyone got the opportunity to hold a rock pool creature.  A great day!

New Chicks

We were all very excited when Mr Vyle brought in the new chicks to show us.  They were born at school a couple of weeks ago and have grown lots already.  Mr Vyle showed everyone how to hold them gently so that we didn't harm them.  We were very quiet so as not to startle either them or mother hen, who has been doing a grand job of looking after them.  Some of the chicks have lovely soft brown feathers and others yellow.  Although mother hen had looked after the eggs, they weren't all hers.  Some of them had been laid by the other hens we have and she had decided to sit on them!

Fairytale Project Celebration

Children from Years 2 and 3 enjoyed an afternoon of exciting literacy based activities with pupils from Knop Law, Milecastle and Westerhope Primary Schools in May.  Pupils from all schools had taken part in their own school's storytelling project with Ma Baker over several weeks, culminating in this joint celebration of all the outstanding work that had taken place.

Ma Baker led some brilliant fairytale themed sessions in school which had included storytelling, baking bread, story mapping and puppet making, all peppered with music and good humour to encourage the children in their learning.

During the celebration, each school did a presentation highlighting the work they had done during the project and we chose to showcase ours by acting out a couple of sketches which was fun!  We had a super time and would like to thank our friends at Knop Law Primary School for making us feel so welcome as their guests.  A big thank you goes to all the parents who helped their children to bake cakes to share on the day too - they were delicious!

Fairytale Settings Homework

We created some fabulous fairytale settings as part of our homework.  Mrs Gill was very impressed with how hard we had worked on our projects!  They look fantastic!

Easter Walk Around

We welcomed visitors from Newburn Parish to share the different events of the Easter Story with us.

Baking Bread with Ma Baker

Year 2 enjoyed baking bread over a firepit outside with Ma Baker.  It was lots of fun and the results were delicious!

Hansel and Gretel with Ma Baker

Ma Baker visited us again and told us another story - Hansel and Gretel.  We thought about the characters in the story and created them with biscuits, gingerbread, icing and sweets!  We then drew our characters and described them!

World Book Day

We had a superb World Book Day!  The class dressed up as fairytale characters and took part in various activities throughout the day.  We made gingerbread men and created some artwork about the story to go on display.  Ma Baker also visited school and told us another fairytale.

Meeting the Storyteller at the Outer West Library

Year 2 and 3 had a fantastic time visiting Ma Baker at the library.  She told us the story of 'The Gingerbread Man' and played us some music too!

The Snow Bear

Year 2 enjoyed 'The Snow Bear' performance and created a storyboard of pictures to tell the story.

Sustrans Stabiliser Free Day

Some of us have been learning how to ride our bikes free of stabilisers, thanks to help and support from Naomi Mackintosh, the Sustrans Bike It officer who visited us at school.

Tinsel and Tea-Towels Performance

Year 2 enjoyed working with Year 3 and 4 on their Tinsel and Tea-Towels production.  They had lots of fun and it was a great show!

On Safari!

All children are enjoying our topic this half term learning about Kenya.  We have written about the animals you would find on a safari.

Fresh food from the garden

We enjoyed tasting the fresh salad vegetables that were in our garden.  They were delicious!
