British Science Week

We have had so much fun this week exploring the theme, 'change and adapt,' in Science. As part of our Science Week investigations, we made our own lava lamps. Ask us about density and why the water and oil stayed separate. Ask us about carbon dioxide and the reaction that caused our volcanoes, we enjoyed making them and they are easy to make at home too!

International Day of Maths

We celebrated International Day of Maths by exploring art and creativity in maths. We created maths that we could touch, patterns, shapes and found maths in nature. We showed how maths is everywhere!

Estimating and Ordering measurements

We selected objects to estimate and measure accurately then we ordered and compared our measurements.

Forest School

Comparing Measures

In maths, we have been measuring and comparing lengths and heights.

Cricket

We have been developing our batting skills with our coach Harry and had lots of fun!

Habitat Hunt

As part of our science week activities and linked with our habitat topic, we have been going on habitat hunts. Looking at microhabitats and food chains and exploring the effects of change.

Which one is shorter?

We have been learning about cm and m in maths and how to measure length, width and height accurately. We have started to compare measurements and to say and show which is the longest or shortest and to order and compare.

Science Week

To start our Science week off we took part in an event about adaptation in an ocean habitat. The theme of science week this year is 'Adaptation and Change' and we have been learning about how animals are adapted to their habitats and how habitats change and what happens if part of a food chain is changed. Ask us about ecosystems and microhabitats too.

World Book Day Activities

We took part in lots of different world book day activities throughout the day and had lots of fun!

Forest School

Bowling in PE

We had lots of fun learning how to bowl in PE with our coaches, Adam and Harry, and we developed our aiming well.

We investigated making equal groups using chocolate coins and explored factors, products and made arrays this week. We are learning about grouping and sharing and enjoyed eating the chocolate too!

Our Final Forest School

Group One have loved their time in Forest School and everything they have experienced and learned. Group Two it's your turn next week!

Safer Internet Day

As part of Safer Internet Day, we learned about scams and how to avoid them. We took part in activities exploring what we could do in different situations and how we could keep ourselves safe. We created our own logo and slogan and talked about being safe online and when using different apps or playing games.

On the Mountain

In PE, we have been explorers on a mountainside during wild, windy weather. However, it was no ordinary mountain but the home of trolls! Children have created dances, motifs, pathways and movements. Working in groups, pairs and individually to perform their sequences. We performed to, 'Night on the Bare Mountain,' by Mussorgsky and 'In the Hall of the Mountain King,' by Edward Grieg from his Peer Gynt suite.

Women and Girls in Science

We found out about the achievements of lots of different women in Science and STEM subjects this week and celebrated International Women and Girls in Science Day. We made booklets about some of the people who inspired us the most and talked about our own ambitions and aspirations.

Exploring in IT

We developed our computing skills today whilst also going exploring - ask us what skills we learned, where we went and how we created it.

Forest Fun this week!

Explorers

Our new History topic is 'Explorers', so in PE we went exploring! In Dance we created movements to explore a rainforest and then the sea, travelling to an undiscovered Island. We put our movements together then joined with 2 others and linked all of our movements to tell the story of our exploration. We enjoyed putting our movements to the Pirates of the Caribbean soundtrack and performing it.

Lost and Found

In music, we retold the story of Lost and Found using a mixture of tuned and untuned instruments and our voices and body percussion. We used the instruments in different ways to create different effects and talked about dynamics, tempo and pitch. We learned the word crescendo and are building towards creating a longer composition and recording some parts using notation. We discussed the feelings of characters at different stages. Last week we watched the animated version of the story to help us to create our own sea creatures and describe the storm and today, we listened to parts of the music that was used in the animation and discussed how the music made us feel and told the story.

PANTS

We were visited by the NSPCC who talked to us about the PANTs rule and who is a trusted adult.

Children's Mental Health Week

We have explored feelings this week through the characters of Inside Out and things that make us joyful, sad, angry, worried, enthused and lots of other feelings. We talked about how we can understand our feelings and each other and strategies that help us when we need them. We watched clips about what mental health is and ways in which we can grow and help ourselves.

Lollipops!

From Lana's lollipop portal in our class novel to buying lollipops in maths to making our own lollipops in Forest School, we've had a week filled with lollipops!

Chinese Music

We learned about the pentatonic scale and listened to some music linked with Chinese New Year. We played games and matched the melodies we heard with their stave notation. We are learning about pitch, duration, timbre and tempo and found out what a crescendo was and dynamics and are starting to recognise some notes on the stave. We had our first try at performing some of our own compositions using the pentatonic scale on glockenspiels. Ask us if we can remember the notes we used.

Finding change and making £1

We made £1 in lots of different ways then we went shopping! We are getting better at working out our change and counting up using different coins.

Chinese New Year

Today, we celebrated Chinese New Year by reading lots of books and learning about the Chinese Zodiac. We performed dances as the animals and retold the story. We watched and learned a dragon dance and talked about Lion dances. We enjoyed finding out about traditions and celebrations.

National Puzzle Day

We took part in lots of puzzles to celebrate National Puzzle Day. We learned how to solve sudoku and loved completing mazes, word searches, logic problems and money challenges.

Shopping!

We agreed on prices for different pic'n'mix and sweet items (from Grimm's supermarket) and were given a budget of £1 to spend. We selected our items and calculated totals and change.

We loved making dens today!

Whose Poo?

We shared the book, 'The Little Mole Who Knew it was None of his Business', then, using the Warburton's farm resources, we became poo detectives and found out that animal poo contains nutrients that feed the soil. We considered why animals have different sorts of poo and used ID sheets to identify animals from their poo.

We have loved designing, making and evaluating our puppets in DT. Our sewing skills are getting much better. Look out for some sock puppets soon...

Ask us about our second Forest School adventures!

Making Amounts

We recognised, ordered and compared coins then we counted and talked about totals and change. We made amounts of money in different ways and solved problems.

Travelling to the Poles...

We performed our dances and pathways during PE to music as we travelled making iceberg shapes and moved like penguins, greeting each other and moving into a colony, shuffling and protecting and passing on our eggs. We had fun slip sliding like penguin chicks and moving like lots of other polar animals.

Making Puppets in DT

We have loved designing our puppets this week, cutting fabric and stitching it together. We've learned how to thread needles and some basic stiches. Look out for some of our finished designs and other puppets soon.

Forest School

Group One have had a wonderful start to the term with their first Forest School session. They loved playing camouflage and are looking forward to next week.

Antarctica Dance

In PE, we had an adventure to a land of icebergs, mountains, snow and ice and twisted and turned in snow flake shapes. We strode and leapt through deep snow and forged our way through a blizzard. Smooth, cross country skiing required us to practise our co ordination and co-operation when we were skiing in a line in our groups. We performed in pairs, groups and individually.

During PHSE we talked about our aims, hopes, dreams and targets for this term and this year. We talked about taking steps to achieve our ambitions and shared what we were proud of achieving last term.

Today in maths, we revisited our shape unit and sorted 2D shapes in lots of different ways. We remembered and recapped some of the properties of shapes and their names. We classified them with our partner in several different ways and explained to the class how we had sorted them.

Happy New Year! It's lovely to be back with you all Year Two and well done for having such a settled, productive and happy start to the Year. Remember it is Forest School this term so wrap up warm tomorrow!
