Autumn term
Rocking around the Christmas Tree
Today was so much fun! We danced our socks off with the amazing rock band and really got into the festive spirit... Until next year!
Target throwing!
We have been improving our throwing skills and our hand-eye coordination through learning to aim at a target with Alasdair, our coach. We had to work with our partner to use an underarm throw to knock over a cone. It was tricky at first but we really improved our skills with good concentration, excellent listening and a little bit of competitiveness. We also enjoyed a game of mini dodgeball at the end of our lesson. It was great fun!
Hibernating Hedgehogs
We had so much fun this week at Scotswood Natural Community Garden learning all about hedgehogs! We know that hedgehogs are mammals that are warm-blooded and we know that in the colder months they will hibernate. We carried out a scientific experiment to see if we could maintain a warm temperature for our 'hedgehogs' in a hibernation nest. We also went on a hedgehog treasure trail to see if we could find some hedgehog treasure which they would love to eat. We found millipedes, worms and lots of woodlice in the garden and woodlands areas. We then found out some amazing facts about hedgehogs. Do you know that they weigh about the same as a small bag of flour and that an adult hedgehog can have between 5,000 and 7,000 spines on its body to help to protect it from predators? Ask us what else we have learned about hedgehogs... we might surprise you!
Remembrance Day
In Year 1, we learned all about why people commemorate Remembrance Day. We made our own poppy art work and took time to think about things we were grateful for. We came up with lots of lovely ideas such as we are grateful for food to eat, people who love us, presents and our families!
World Mental Health Day 2024
Our feelings and emotions change every day and we know we can use the Zones of Regulation to help us to understand how ourselves and others feel. Our mental health and well-being is very important and we are learning about ways we can maintain a healthy body and mind with help.
Happy Harvest
We read the story of Oliver’s Vegetables by Vivian French and we loved it! We retold the story to the school and our families in the Harvest performance. Mrs Howse and Miss Luke were very proud of our artwork and the lines we learned and confidently delivered during the celebration.
Throwing, catching, moving safely and balances
Look at what we can do!
Our Blue Planet
In Geography, we are learning about our wonderful planet, Earth. We know that our planet is covered mainly in water and that the land is divided into seven continents. Why don’t you ask us which continent we live in? We enjoyed playing with continents jigsaws, studying atlases and finding the United Kingdom on our class globe. Learning is so much fun!
Look at our artwork!
We had a great time painting our faces for display in the classroom.
Our first computing session
In Year 1 we had our first computing session where we programmed the 'BeeBots' to follow simple instructions. We can now programme the Beebots to move forwards and backwards and to make turns, which was great fun. We really enjoyed our first computing session!
Our first week in Year 1
We have enjoyed exploring the games and resources in Year 1 with our friends this week and catching up on everyone's news. We know all about the wonderful things our class got up to over the long summer break and we are super excited to get started on all of the new things we will be learning throughout the year.
