Learning together, growing together

Spring Term

Term 2b Week 3

We have thought about Bear Facts this week and looked at YouTube videos, documentaries and Non-Fiction books.  We began thinking about David Attenborough and how long he has been making documentaries about wild life and how filming and human intervention has changed over the last 50 years. In Maths we have been consolidating our knowledge of doubling and thinking about sorting and categorising items such as odd and even.

Sorting Stones, colours, sizes, rough or smooth.

Term 2b Week 2

This week in Maths we have been thinking about doubles as 2 equal numbers, or adding the same again, we have been using the stem sentence '2 is made of 1 and 1, double 1 is 2', and so on all the way up to double 5 on our fingers or even double 10 using the numicon tiles.

We also enjoyed the lovely weather and took Henry bear outside, using lots of the large equipment we worked in teams to make him a bear cave, some of them were big enough that 4 or 5 children could fit inside too!

Using Numicon to make doubles

Term 2b Week 1

We had a busy first week back with making and eating pancakes for pancake day, getting outside in the lovely spring weather and having our first 'Balls Skills' session with the new PE coach.

Our topic for this half term is 'Where Do Bears Live?' and we are thinking about settings, characters, facts and fiction through the story of 'We're Going on a Bear Hunt'.

Term 2a Week 5

We have been thinking about Chinese New Year this week learning about the way the years got their names, finding out about some of the practices and traditions of people celebrating Chinese New Year.  Reception have worked hard to make paper dragons colouring and cutting carefully then folding paper to make the body.  There has also been a lot of lovely independent work in our continuous provision this week including in our outdoor space which we are able to use more now that the weather is a little warmer.

Term 2a Week 4

Reception have read lots of the series of 'Oi Frog!' books 'Oi Dog!' 'Oi Cat!' 'Oi Duck-Billed Platypus!' There are some links to these stories on YouTube below.

Term 2a week 3

In Maths this week we have been focusing on numbers to 5 first recognising and labeling towers from 1-5 and then doing the same but with the towers in a random order.  Then we have been finding other numbers inside of 5 and using the stem sentences

5 is made of ___ and ___.  ___ and ___ make 5.

e.g. 5 is made of 4 and 1. 4 and 1 make 5.

or even 5 is made of 1 and 2 and 2.  1 and 2 and 2 make 5.

Writing numerals

Partitioning 5 (finding all of the amounts inside of 5)

Term 2a Week 2

This week we have been learning about the parts of books from the cover, thinking about the title, author, illustrator and the blurb.  Then moving on to what happens inside the setting, characters and events in the story.  We have been working on describing characters in our series of books 'Oi Frog!' using full sentences and specific vocabulary and then working hard to write it down so others can read our ideas.

I am so proud of all of the fantastic writing!

Term 2a Week 1

This half term we are thinking about 'What are rhyming words?' and using the 'Oi Frog!' series of books to help us find out. We have also introduced a calendar and weather map so we can think about when it is and the change of seasons and were we are in relation to the rest of the UK.
