Learning together, growing together

Autumn

Children in Need

Today was Children in Need and Year 1 were certainly ready to help out by spending the day in non-uniform or other Pudsey-related clothing to raise money for this wonderful cause! We talked about why there is a special day each year to raise money for children in the UK and beyond - lots of thoughtful ideas were shared and discussed.

Power for Good

This week is Anti-Bullying Week. This year’s theme is Power for Good. This event empowers teachers and children to do something positive to counter the harm and hurt that bullying causes. We have watched videos on what other primary school children think bullying is and what is may involve and we have took part in whole class discussions which allowed us the freedom to share what we think bullying is and why it is important to try to prevent it from happening. In support of the Anti-Bullying Alliance, we made a whole class bunting in blue and we made individual wrist bands which clearly show the slogan, ‘Power for Good’.

Yum Yum!
We are learning about animals and humans and what we eat to survive. We know that not all animals eat the same things and that some humans choose to eat different things too.  We now know the meaning of the scientific terms carnivores, herbivores and omnivores and we can name some common animals which fall into each group. We also learned that Year 1 love food!

Magnificent Moving Pictures

It has been Design and Technology and Art Week at school and we have been busy making moving pictures as part of our DT curriculum. We split up our learning into four stages:

Stage 1 - Research

We had lots of fun exploring and reading a range of moving picture books in the classroom before discussing the mechanisms used to make parts of the pictures move. Our research allowed us to gather some ideas for our own designs. We had a go at making sliders and levers for the first time and discussed what worked best.

World Mental Health Day

Today 10th October is World Mental Health Day, but we want everyone to understand that mental health is important every day. In honour of this we are wearing yellow to raise awareness and to keep the conversations around mental health going.

Our amazing planet Earth

We have been learning all about our little blue planet called Earth. We were thrilled to see satellite images of Earth from space and we know that there is much more water than land on our planet. We know that the conditions on Earth are just right to support all life and we are now learning about the seven continents and the five oceans. Have a look what we have been up to in class so far in our Geography lessons.

The Tiger Who Came to Tea

We have enjoyed learning about our senses this week while writing in the first person as the tiger from the story of 'The Tiger Who Came to Tea' by Judith Kerr.  What might the Tiger see, hear, smell, taste or feel while he was in Sophie's house? What other delicious foods could he taste if he ate with the family in the cafe that night?  We designed our own menus for The Moonlight Cafe which we really enjoyed.  Our work is proudly displayed in our book corner and the entrance to our classroom.

Sharing is caring!
As part of our PSHE lessons, we have been discussing the different ways we show that we care for one another. We know that we can hug our family and friends, we can make each other laugh, we can hold hands and we can use hand gestures to show we love them and they are important to us. We also understand that saying sorry is a way to show we care about others feelings.

Keep to the beat

Today we used musical instruments to keep the pulse and follow a rhythm.

Welcome back to school!
The children have really enjoyed getting to know their new classroom and resources. We had a great first week in Year 1.
