Happy Easter Year 5, have a wonderful break and well done for all of your hard work and efforts this half term you are fabulous. Remember to keep reading and taking part in the TTRS Rockathon - I'll be checking results and we could beat Year 3 and 4 if we all do some! Keep rockslamming too! Easter Craft fun!

We all had a wonderful Easter crafts afternoon. It was lovely to see such a good turn out from relatives.

Spanish Armada! 

We discussed and sorted causes of the Armada and explored sources and reasons for the Armada failing. 

We have been celebrating World Maths Day. The theme this year is, 'united by numbers,' and we have taken part in different activities. As part of this, we set up temporary Mathletics accounts where we could play maths games against others. Today, we took part in a Times Tables Webinar with Gareth Metcalfe (creator of 'I See maths' reasoning) and Gareth guided us through the process of deconstructing multiplicative word questions, demonstrating the approaches, representations, and thinking routines and we enjoyed working together to solve challenges. 

Thank you all so much Year 5 for your contributions to Comic Relief today. You are fantastic and thank you for helping the school to raise money to support Comic relief. 

A just world free from poverty | Comic Relief

Eid Mubarak, in class, we talked about Eid and found out about the festival and celebrations. 

Happy Saint Patrick's Day. We explored the story of Saint Patrick and sang lots of Irish songs during our singing assembly as well as our new spring ones.  

We have been exploring causes of the Spanish Armada and debated what we thought were the main causes, we then sequenced events. 

Year 5 have continued exploring the Easter story from points of view of different people and talked about feelings, thoughts and forgiveness.

We celebrated Science Week by exploring the theme, 'Curiosity: What is your question?' We took part in online lessons about the Moon with Tim Peake and completed lots if activities, asking questions and discovering the answers. 

We added jumps into our gymnastics sequences and performed straddle and pike jumps. 

Irreversible Changes in Science 

We investigated what happens when different materials burned and drew conclusions. We planned a safe investigation and had lots of fun finding out what happened. 

World Book Day Fun!

World Book Day - Harry Potter Maths!

We solved time turner problems in maths today and worked together to solve Harry Potter puzzles. Well done to Elodie and Olivia for solving the most questions and winning the wearing of the time turner! 

We loved celebrating Mars Day and revisiting and learning new information about Space!

We are enjoying composing and performing in music and learning raps. Our sense of pulse and rhythm has improved lots!

PE - Balance and incorporating movement from last weeks lesson.

Tudor Inventory 

We looked at different Tudor inventories and compared the lives of rich and poor people in Tudor times. We enjoyed reading, finding totals of money using their system and comparing spellings also. Ask us how different the lives and possessions of people were. We compared sources and asked questions. 

Gymnastics 

We have been learning how to perform a straddle, pike, tuck, arch and dish in PE and how to move from the floor to a standing position creating a sequence of 6 movements. We combined our positions on the floor and apparatus and added starting and finishing positions. We worked in pairs and small groups mirroring and enjoyed adding in pirate movements and performing our group sequences to pirate music. 

It has been lovely welcoming you all back to school today. We are continuing with our Tudor topic this half term and have started to create our own Tudor portraits in art, learning about some of the techniques that were used and discussing the works in the National Portrait Gallery. We have developed our understanding of hues and using tints, tones and shades.

Developing our Haka's

Haka

We have loved working with Harry to create our final Haka's and improving them. We performed them this week and all enjoyed being as intimidating as we could be! 

Mental Health Week 

We took parts in lots of activities during Mental Health week, the theme was 'Place2Be' and we talked about special places to us and where and how we felt we belonged. The Rise team visited and delivered a talk about managing anxieties and worries and learned songs and talked about ways in which we can develop our mental well being. 

 

Art Week - developing our sketching and shading skills and creating Tudor portraits.

Comparing Sources 

We looked at lots of different sources as part of our history topic about The Tudors and compared what the sources showed us about Henry VIII. We explored primary and secondary sources and which were the most reliable sources and why. We compared what Henry was like when he was younger and older. 

 

We developed our non-fiction reading skills when reading about the Tudors in history. We gained a fact and gave a fact and enjoyed finding out about life in Tudor times. 

Tudor Dance

We learned the steps of the Pavan and a Tudor country dance, we worked hard to stay in time to the music and perform the steps correctly. 

Today the Rise Team visited us and we took part in a workshop about resilience. We participated in a meditation and drew our happy places as well as discussing scenarios and strategies to help us to have positive thinking.

We learned about King Henry VIII's court and some Tudor dance movements and performed them to Tudor music.

Non-Chronological Report writing based on our learning in Geography about the Rainforest.

We wrote diary entries about events in the rainforest from reading our class text, 'The Explorer'.

We worked on our timings in our Haka performances and appraised each other. 

Investigating Thermal Insulators in Science 

Year 5 planned and carried out a fair test, investigating thermal insulators. Ask us about whether our hypothesis was correct, our results and conclusions and how the test was fair and reliable.

Computing

We have worked very hard to create a 'Micro Bit' in our IT session today. We showed resilience in learning new skills and persevering and had lots of fun coding and creating our moodometers. Ask us about what we did and how! 

Exploring pollination and fertilisation in plants.

In Science, we have been learning about sexual and asexual reproduction in plants and pollination. we looked at the parts of a flower under microscopes and found out what their function is. 

Haka 

This week with Newcastle Sports Service coach Harry, we have worked on developing different formations in our Haka's and had lots of fun! 

DT Stuffed Toy

We have improved our sewing skills whilst making stuffed toys in DT. We designed them based on rainforest animals and are starting to decorate them. There are different techniques to use in a design such as cross-stitch, running-stitch, blanket-stitch and applique and we have been learning about these. After researching and designing our products, we started to make and evaluate them. 

Haka

We have been creating our own Haka's and trying different movements, words and sequences. Next week we will be experimenting with different formations. 

Happy New Year! We have learned all about the Epiphany this week and celebrated the New Year and setting goals in families. Our Explorer text has become exciting and our class rainforest is well underway. In maths we have conquered adding fractions with different denominations and mixed numbers and are ready to move onto subtracting next week. Some of you have leapt straight into the bingo homework tasks with portraits, masks, research, models, writing and headdresses! Highlight of the week for some of us has been learning how to perform a Haka dance with Harry, our PE coach this half term. Welcome back Year 5 and well done for your enthusiasm, hard work and cheerfulness this week it's lovely having you back and I can't wait to get started finding all about The Tudors and doing lots of investigations this half term in our Science topic materials.
