Spring
Term 2b Week 6
We have had a fantastic last week of term, Miss Hall only has a few weeks left with us, it has been brilliant to have her in our class since January. The Easter Eggs that were decorated from the Reception children and their parents were lovely and had obviously had a lot of work put into them. The Easter Craft Afternoon was really well attended and it was super to see children and adults working hard on their Easter crafts.
I hope you all have a lovely holiday and come back after these two weeks off refreshed and ready for our packed summer term!
Term 2b Week 5
Our big event this week was our Bear Hunt! We walked to the Dene, through the mud, into the forest, over some fallen trees, into the river, then back to our school grounds to try to find some long grass, a bubble snowstorm and a bear in a cave!
Term 2b Week 4
We are getting really good at telling our 'Bear Hunt' story and have had a go at making the settings using the outdoor resources.
We have been thinking about David Attenborough and looking at the films he first made in the 1950's and how they are different to the films he has made more recently. We spent some time looking at pictures of the kind of film cameras he would have used then and how big they were verses now when we can take pictures and videos with mobile phones. We also thought a little bit about the different way we think about the natural world now, that now most film crews just watch they don't get involved, where as some of the early films with David Attenborough he was collecting animals.
This is the book we looked at when we were thinking about Sir David
Term 2b Week 3
This week in Maths we have been thinking about comparison - what makes things the same or different - we looked at this idea in terms of number and in terms of objects, we sorted stones thinking about what made them the same or different, size, shape, colour.
In our English jobs we have been thinking about bear facts and the difference between fiction and non fiction books, stories and facts. We worked hard to think of bear fact sentences and then to write some of them down.
Our PE work this half term is Gymnastics thinking of the way our bodies move in space we have done some work over and under benches this week we thought about different ways to move along benches.
The children have had access to an ipad to photograph their free choice work, we look at it on a Friday and talk about what they have done and what they are proud of from the week.
Maths - sorting stones
Telling the Bear Hunt story in our new bear cave
Children's pictures
PE moving along the benches
Term 2a Week 2
In English we have been writing descriptions of the Bear from the Bear Hunt looking at the 'sharp claws' the 'brown fur' the 'googly eyes'. We went outside and used lots of our resources to make bear cave for Henry bear and even some of the Reception children fitted in. On World Book Day we came in lovely costumes, learning to tell the bear hunt story is going really well so we recorded it for you to watch below.
In PSED we thought about loving our world and looking after it by recycling.
Our attendance this week was 100%! we only need 7 more days of full attendance this half term to get an afternoon party at the end of term.
We’re Going On A Bear Hunt
Bear Caves
Term 2b Week 1
We started off this week by thinking about pancake day and who celebrated it and why. We really enjoyed mixing and eating pancakes.
Our New topic this half term is based around the 'We're Going On A Bear Hunt' story, we have been learning to say the chant together and think about the settings of the story and which order they come in. We used different materials to make collages for the various settings in the book, grass, river, snow storm, mud, forest, cave so we can put up a display about the story.
We watched Michael Rosen say Bear Hunt chant on YouTube.
Term 2a Week 6
This week Reception have been thinking about Chinese New Year. We watched videos about the legend of the zodiac animals race and thought about ordinal numbers and saying who came first, second all the way to last. Reception looked at non fiction books about Chinese New Year and looked at an atlas to find out how big the country of China is and how small our country is. On Friday we ate some rice, noodles, stir fry and prawn crackers as an end of half term treat.
In PSED we also thought about Valentines day, by thinking about people who we love and people who love us we also made finger print cards.
Ordering Ordinal Numbers
Making Chinese Dragons
Trying the Food!
Valentines Day Cards
Term 2a Week 5
Reception have been comparing amounts this week and talking about more and fewer to describe amounts of objects using the phrases.
Sam has more than Pat.
Pat has fewer than Sam.
In our English work this week we have been writing our own 'That's not my Cat' books thinking of reasons why the cat's are or aren't ours.
Reception are doing really well in their dance work with Coach Harry - we have moved from making statues of animals to moving like different animals and matching our movements to the beat of the music, transitioning from still to moving and remembering a sequence together.
Term 2a Week 4
We have done lots of Maths jobs this week we continued to think about parts of 5 using 5 little speckled frogs as a model and then ordered amounts and numerals 1-10.
Term 2a Week 3
Our Dance lessons with Coach Harry are going really well, we are pretending to be different types of animals thinking about their movements and working on moving to the beat.
In our Maths work we have been thinking about parts of 5 (partitioning) looking for other numbers inside of 5 and practising saying
'5 is made of 1 and 4, 1 and 4 makes 5' or
'5 is made of 2 and 3, 2 and 3 make 5' or even
'5 is made of 2 and 2 and 1, 2 and 2 and 1 makes 5'.
We have been writing our own rhyming rules books, where animals have to sit on objects that rhyme with them - bats sit on cats, ducks sit on trucks, snails sit on nails.
Term 2a Week 2
Continuing with our rhyming theme we have been reading and watching the Oi series of books, Oi Frog! Oi Dog! and Oi Cat! If you want to watch them again her are the youtube links.
We played a game of matching pairs with rhyming words from the Oi Frog! book - Cat /Mat, Parrot/Carrot, Puffin/Muffin.
Reception enjoyed working outside and investigating the ice at the end of our week.
Term 2a Week 1
Reception have come back after the Christmas break looking really grown up, they have settled back into the rhythm of our school and class really well, remembering lots of our routines and classroom expectations.
This term we have a student teacher in our class, Miss Hall will be working in Reception and finding about how we learn and work together at Newburn Manor. We are also having one PE session a week with a coach from the Newcastle PE and Sports service, Harry is teaching us about dance, movement, and space and will be with us until February half term.
Our focus for this half term is 'What makes a rhyming word?' and we will be looking at the Oi Frog series of books to help us think about this topic. This week the children worked in groups to identify and write rhyming words. We also got Lexia logins and are having a go at this in class before logins will be sent home so you can work on your phonics skills using Lexia at home too.
